Many Paths, Many Destinations – Learning...With a Growth Mindset
Dawn’s post-secondary education began with a Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University, where she majored in both History and Humanities. After living on two other continents, she arrived back in Canada at Vancouver Island University, where she completed a Bachelor of Education and a Diploma in Special Education.
As a History major, she understands the importance of a strong academic foundation. As a Humanities major, she realizes the importance of contextualizing and personalizing material. Adding the Special Education component has given her the tools to appreciate each student’s unique perspective.
Beyond simply education, Dawn has experience tutoring students with a wide range of abilities and skills. She has a passion for helping students with learning disabilities develop strategies and self-esteem so that they can face challenges with confidence. She also enjoys working with newcomers to Canada and has an understanding of their ESL needs.
She has always enjoyed visiting the historical sites of her studies, but loves her home on the west coast.
In Dawn's own words:“An appreciation for academic and experiential learning lies at the heart of my teaching practice. I always endeavour to create a positive environment in which every student is capable of meaningful learning experiences. True success comes...With A ‘Twist’ and that’s the moment when a student realizes for him or herself the value of authentic learning and the strategies to accomplish this in the classroom and other areas of life.”
