Julie  dreamt of  being a teacher from a young age.  She trained to be a primary school teacher in France after finishing her Bachelor’s degree. She quickly realised the French government’s approach to education was not what she wanted to bring into her students’ lives. With that knowledge, she decided to move to England and work as an au pair to learn English and still continue to live her passion of working with children! Being in England,  she found out she had a knack for languages.

Three years after moving to England, she got her teaching certificate and realized her dream of becoming a teacher! She has specialized in teaching in various places around the world from the UK to Australia and, then, to beautiful British Columbia. This has given her a varied perspective on the different ways one can teach. Her experiences have also focused on teaching those on the spectrum, as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) students.

Always up for a challenge, Julie took on the role of Program Coordinator for a company that runs STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) classes for kids in Greater Victoria. Through this new position, she’s learnt basic coding using Scratch and other coding blocks apps and is still learning a lot about robotics, Minecraft, and the like! As this programs are run out of community centres, they service all range of learning abilities and styles, as well as homeschooled and bricks and mortar students. Maybe she’s even taught your child?!

Julie has also worked in the management side of schools. She thrived in developing curriculum, as well as the professional development side. She still continues to develop curriculum. Teaching teachers, supporting them in their journey, and helping them reach their full potential was always a favourite part of this administration job.

In  her free time, Julie loves cooking for her friends and family and spending time in nature. She has a passion for learning and believes that anyone can learn anything if they really want to and that without ‘miss-takes’, learning can’t happen. Trial and errors are how humans learn both academically and in life and that’s what makes learning and life so interesting! She can also 3D print things these days. 🙂 She has a regular 3D printer as well as a resin one.

She’s also started to learn ASL (American Sign Language) and hopes to keep taking classes and learning about deaf culture and its uniqueness.

Before settling in Victoria, as mentioned, Julie traveled to many countries and loved every second of it. The people, the culture, the food, the history, she loved it all and is hoping to have the opportunity to see more of the world. A new love Julie found in Canada was her love for Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). Being an avid reader, she fell in love with how volatile and creative the game is and she believes it can be used as a tool to facilitate learning in subject as varied as math, history, or art.

Julie is very excited to be joining the Tutoring…With a Twist team as she feels their view on education truly align, She’s always aspired to be that person that supports her students and helps them see they are able to achieve so much more than they think they can. She thrives to share her curiosity and thirst for learning and hopes to spark her students’ dreams into life.

In Julie's own words:"To me, the Twist means that we are preparing kids for life, not just school and showing them it's ok to not be perfect as long as you did your best. It's about finding your strengths and weaknesses and turning everything into an opportunity rather than bringing yourself down by negatively describing the things that you struggle with. It's also about passion and learning that failure is not the end, just a bump in the road. There is so much they will have to face and I believe that the earlier they are given the tools to communicate clearly, analyse and assess the situations they are in, express themselves and their feelings honestly, and learn from their experiences, the more fulfilled they will be. The Twist is a way of life, not just a way to teach."
