Learn for Life - not just for school!
Ruby grew up in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, also known around the world as the stunning City of Gardens! A keen little leader, she spent many of her after-school hours setting up chairs in her childhood bedroom and ‘teaching’ her stuffed animals how to read, write, and complete their homework assignments. Ruby always knew she wanted to grow up to be a teacher, even from a young age – her stuffed animals always gave her rave reviews!
Always eager to teach and mentor others, she spent her first post-high school years volunteering in elementary classrooms, working as a lead instructor at youth technology camps, and helping young children learn how to read through her university’s “Students for Literacy” program. She was invited into the Honours English program at the University of Victoria (UVic), where she defended her Honours thesis and graduated with distinction! During her time at UVic, Ruby also worked as a junior editor/copy editor for the UVic publication, The Albatross.
Eager to venture into the teaching world, Ruby entered into the Bachelor of Education program at Vancouver Island University (VIU), where she explored her individualistic approach to teaching and gathered many modern teaching strategies and tools that would help her engage students in their own learning. This program stressed the significance of personalized learning, project-based learning, First Peoples Principles of Learning, and technology-infused learning environments, equipping Ruby with a toolbox of strategies and wisdom to carry with her into her teaching career. Now, with the program completed, Ruby has graduated and is a BC Certified K-12 teacher and Tutoring…With A Twist tutor.
An avid art enthusiast, Ruby can usually be found painting, collaging, and sketching in her free time; she has had multiple art pieces published in VIU’s publication, Portal, and is always creating something whenever she can. Ruby’s passion for art fuels her other hopes, wishes, and desires; similarly, Ruby believes that students flourish best when they are passionate, and she always aims to connect with her students over their own individual passions and interests. This way, Ruby cultivates trusting relationships and uniquely encourages students to find meaning and happiness in their work and life. Ruby would love to hear from you and your child if you have any questions or comments for her! She always loves meeting new people and is excited to see you soon.

In Ruby's own words:"What I value most about The Twist is the commitment to tutoring not only for school work and understanding content, but for the development of life skills and confidence. Our students deserve a non-judgmental and endlessly encouraging learning environment which helps develop healthy attitudes and skills. The Twist really embodies this, providing a learning environment and guide that promotes both knowledge acquisition and development of the positive behaviours and life skills that will benefit students within and beyond traditional schooling. This won't be your average tutoring session!"
