Sasha Blakeley – Serving Victoria & Beyond as an Online Tutor

Sasha has more than five years’ experience as a tutor and teacher in Canada and Taiwan. She has worked with students from aged 5-20, in elementary school, high school, university, French Immersion, and ESL contexts. Originally from Vancouver, she recently returned from a year in Taiwan where she taught English immersion classes with a focus on phonics and vocabulary. She taught more than 200 students across 12 classes, matching her lessons to a variety of learning styles and fluency levels. She learned a lot about compassionately and effectively approaching cultural and linguistic barriers and creating a learning environment where all students can feel at ease.

In 2017, Sasha graduated from McGill University with a degree in English Literature and Linguistics. She is passionate about language in all its forms and is always ready to learn more. She also completed her elementary and high school education in the French Immersion program, after which she lived in Montreal for university and spoke French on a daily basis. She is eager to provide support to French Immersion students with specific education needs, especially if they (like Sasha!) have parents who are not as able to help with homework in French.

Sasha is committed to creating a safe, engaging, and fun learning environment. It is her goal to meet students wherever they are in their academic journey, without judgment or negativity. If a student is struggling with a particular subject, Sasha understands the need to slow down and work through concepts at a student’s own pace. If a student needs an extra challenge or material enrichment, Sasha is ready to go above and beyond to explore a subject that a student cares about. The twist is about understanding that students’ needs must be approached holistically, emphasizing all students as whole people with complex needs and interests. It is Sasha’s belief that in the right educational environment, all students can thrive.

Sasha is looking forward to working with French Immersion and ESL students of all ages. She would love to work with students from grade 1 through university on their English assignments, including grammar, vocabulary, spelling, reading, essay writing, and poetry. She tutors history, social studies, and biology for elementary and high school students. She also tutors math up to the grade 9 level. If you are working toward a major exam or test, or even studying for the SATs, Sasha does a lot of work with time management and studying skills. She is looking forward to working with you!

In Sasha's own words:"The Twist is a compassionate and well-reasoned approach to education. It prioritizes the needs and interests of individual students, allowing them to take the time they need to learn without becoming discouraged. It emphasizes infusing students’ learning with fun, ideally allowing them to become lifelong learners. It also focuses on helping students to self-evaluate their behaviour and areas where they may have difficulty, in order to create self-awareness and a mindful approach. In short, the Twist approaches tutoring not simply as a means to an end, but as a holistic approach designed to fully support all students."
