The first day of kindergarten is a massive deal. All the town\u2019s five-year-olds line up in perfect disorder, backpacks proudly on their shoulders or lying crumpled on the ground a few feet away, each of them embarking on an educational journey that will span the next thirteen years of their life. And you, as a parent, are part of that journey. Everything you\u2019ve done until this moment has helped your child prepare for kindergarten. Is your child ready?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How Do I Know if My Child is Ready?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Everyone is different, so there are no universal indicators to reveal a child\u2019s kindergarten readiness. Each kid will develop their skills at their own rate, and they will demonstrate their progress in their own way. However, there are some general guidelines you can use to help decide if your child is ready or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kindergarten-Readiness Checklist<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Children are most likely to succeed in kindergarten if they can do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Understand simple verbal instructions<\/li>
Respect the personal space of others (no hitting, biting, etc.)<\/li>
Use pencils, glue, scissors, and other craft-related tools<\/li>
Say goodbye to and separate from family members without getting upset<\/li>
Point out letters and numbers, even if they don\u2019t know them<\/li>
Use the washroom without help<\/li>
Make decisions when presented with a collection of options<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
If your child struggles with one or more of the above tasks, don\u2019t fret! It\u2019s not the end of the world, and it doesn\u2019t say anything about your skills as a parent\u2014you\u2019re awesome! As previously mentioned, everyone develops differently, and this list isn\u2019t the be-all and end-all of kindergarten readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you think your child might not be ready for kindergarten, there is absolutely nothing wrong with delaying kindergarten for a year. Lots of parents do it, and it can have an overwhelmingly positive effect on a child\u2019s confidence. Playtime is Essential<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Children of all ages, but especially those aged four to five, need<\/em> to play, and they need to play often. Playtime helps children become familiar with their own bodies and minds, giving them fundamental skills they can later apply to more focused activities like schoolwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
