Ray Wang

Throughout his entire life, Ray has been captivated by the wonders of science. At first, it was the childlike wonder of discovery from being read picture books full of random science facts that immediately got him hooked. However, like many children today, growing up he was greeted with a teetering world plagued with unresolved issues and realised that science can be a powerful tool and a beacon of hope in positively reshaping the world. The fuel of curiosity, ignited by his desire to brighten the future for all, led Ray to join and graduate from the International Baccalaureate program with triple High-Level science courses, and continue onto a Bachelor of Science at the University of British Columbia. Today, he studies there with the goal of obtaining a PhD in pharmacology. Go Ray Go!

Just as important as science is to Ray, so is teaching. He recognizes that he would not be walking down the path he is on today if it were not for the teachers and tutors that motivated him, inspired him with the feeling of childlike wonder, and helped him discover his potential and place in the world. Initially, it was simply the habit of helping classmates after class, but eventually, his hobby of tutoring led him to volunteer as one for his local middle school. Furthermore, as the pandemic broke down communication between students and teachers, he decided to start an IB Online Peer Tutoring Club to rally a group of peer tutors to offer assistance to classmates struggling with classes.

Ray is highly introspective and curious and is often caught by his friends deep in thought or searching for an explanation for a random natural phenomenon. His introspection has taught him the importance of understanding and adapting to one’s own uniqueness when approaching any aspect of life. His curiosity has led him on a lifelong journey of learning, exceeding what is simply expected by participating and winning awards in many sciences, math, and speech contests. However, above all, Ray understands the unparalleled importance of human connection and its power in improving lives. As a tutor, Ray is focused on building a strong bond with his tutees – to better understand them not only in the context of academics but holistically. He believes that only through genuinely understanding an individual can you truly help them. By giving his tutees the spotlight, Ray instead takes the role of a catalyst that draws out their internal curiosity to promote rich understanding, introduces them to a variety of tools and strategies to solve problems as independent thinkers, and helps them actualize the potential that they have hidden within them.
