Kevin knows what it’s like to want to understand the world around him. Born in Prince George and having spent the last decade on Vancouver Island, his pursuit of knowledge and experiences has motivated him to seek out exciting opportunities to learn and grow. Whether it was snow-caving in a blizzard or solo backpacking across Europe, Kevin took chances when they came his way. Kevin spent much of his adult life trying to figure out who he was. He explored philosophy, science, business, and more, his appetite to learn always growing. After completing his Engineering, Drafting, and Design Technology Diploma, he eventually realized that there is no better path through life than following your passions and was afforded the opportunity to pursue his love of writing. Since committing himself to his dream, Kevin has written short stories, novellas, and full length novels. He even spotted a space for a literary magazine that specialized in science fiction, horror, and fantasy. His experiences have taught him the need to be passionate about what you do, setting goals, and finding the motivation to follow through.

Kevin’s philosophy on learning is to never stop. Keep asking questions and don’t be afraid to say you don’t know. He believes in the strengths of critical thinking, problem solving, and being curious. He has tutored students from elementary age all the way to university. His focus is getting students excited to learn through growing confidence and building skills. Kevin believes in breaking down problems into manageable bits and looking at them from multiple angles. He knows that in a world bursting with information it is more important than ever to know how to find good, reliable sources. He knows what it’s like to be challenged at school and uses empathy, patience, and asking lots of questions to create a learning environment that is both approachable and understanding. Having a child with ADHD has also provided him with lots of opportunities to learn how to overcome obstacles such as time management, organization, and big emotions.

Life is more than just what you know or the path you take. The journey is as important as the destination. Knowing how to learn is as important, if not more so, as what you actually learn. Kevin’s work in engineering trained him in problem solving, analytical thinking, and practical applications of concepts. It taught him that there are tools and resources just waiting to be discovered. His time as a writer has honed his ability to communicate clearly, to think creatively, and find different ways to tell a story. His work as an editor has enhanced his skills in revising and helping others find their own, unique voice. Kevin’s life philosophy is that there is always an opportunity to improve, but that doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate all of our successes along the way.

In Kevin's own words:The twist is about how success in education is not just about what a student learns. It's about how they feel, their dreams and goals, their ability to work with others, being fearless in their pursuit of learning, finding and chasing their passions, having confidence in their abilities, and personal awareness.
