Daniel is an all-around nerd who loves to have fun with learning. He’s been a tutor in some aspect since grade 10, and he loves helping people find that spark of joy in learning. After double-majoring in chemistry and forensic science, he went on to get his Ph.D. from Dartmouth College in Experimental and Molecular Medicine where he worked on developing new approaches to treating Staph and MRSA infections. During graduate school, he also found a love of silversmithing and enameling – an art form that he continues to pursue and teach today. After finishing his Ph.D. he decided to dedicate his career to getting young people interested in science, especially chemistry.

At the Waterford School, Daniel was more than a beloved chemistry teacher. While he helped students find their passion for learning in the classroom, he also wanted to engage them in the broader context of science. With the help of a former student, he started a branch of Science Olympiad, a US national-level competition of diverse science topics and activities. Last year he guided the Waterford team who won at the state level and made it to nationals! Daniel also mentored students who wanted to advance their science careers, running a program with the University of Utah that brought high school students into the lab to do academic research in the area of pharmacology.

Daniel has been visiting the greater Vancouver area for about 15 years and always had a dream to move to this amazing place, which he finally accomplished this year when he started his master’s program at VIU focusing on educational leadership. The Island allows Daniel to explore his myriad interests, as he’s a “collector of hobbies,” which include cooking, hiking, silversmithing, enameling, playing board games, playing Dungeons and Dragons, and pursuing whatever other awesome opportunities come his way.

In Daniel's own words:"Learning does not happen in a vacuum. It is also not an innate skill, as it can be practiced like any other skill. By focusing on learners’ needs first, we can meet them where they are and build trusting relationships that unlock a joy for learning. It is important that learners see learning as not an end goal but as a pathway for living their life, always."
