Let’s examine 3 of these studies to see what tutoring can do.
Tutoring Reduces Math Anxiety
Math anxiety affects around 50% of grade-school children in the United States and has a severely negative impact on a child’s development. Fortunately, one of the benefits of tutoring is a significant decrease in math anxiety.
In 2015, a group of behavioural scientists conducted a study to test the effects of tutoring on elementary students suffering from math anxiety. The study involved students aged 7 to 9 years old who were tested for math anxiety using the Scale for Early Mathematics Anxiety (SEMA). MRI data was also used to monitor activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for feelings of fear.
After completing 8 weeks of math tutoring, the students who originally tested high in math anxiety saw a significant drop in math anxiety levels. Students also displayed an increased aptitude for arithmetic problems through faster reaction times and better accuracy. In addition, the amygdala activity in students with high math anxiety was reduced to a normal level, suggesting fewer feelings of fear regarding math.
It can be concluded that tutoring is an effective way to reduce math anxiety in children. The study notes that math anxiety can start early in a child’s life and can cause lifelong difficulties processing situations requiring problem-solving skills. Tutoring Improves Academic Performance
Another study conducted in 2015 tracked the academic performance of elementary students before and after participating in once-a-week tutoring. Students were sorted into groups based on whether they had participated in a total of fewer than 11 hours, 11 to 20 hours, or more than 20 hours of tutoring. The benefits of tutoring quickly became clear.
Once-a-week after-school tutoring proved to be effective in improving the grades of elementary students in reading, writing, and math skills. Not only did participants see higher test scores than before they started tutoring, they also surpassed the grades of their fellow classmates who did not receive tutoring. Students who received a total of 11 to 20 hours of tutoring saw the most significant increase in academic performance.
The teachers remarked that the tutored students displayed higher levels of confidence and competence in the classroom. They also mentioned that some students had been at risk of failing and that tutoring was the key factor in ensuring they passed. With results like these, the benefits of tutoring are clear, and it’s no wonder so many parents are hiring tutors these days!
After-School Tutoring for At-Risk Children and Students with Learning Disabilities
In 2001, researchers conducted a scientific study to determine the effectiveness of after-school tutoring among at-risk children and students with learning disabilities. The participating students were all in middle school and were receiving poor marks (61% or lower) on tests and quizzes.
After receiving 30-minute tutoring sessions 2 to 3 times per week for 4 to 12 weeks, students saw massive improvements on test and quiz scores. One student saw their quiz marks go up from an average of 45% to an average of 80%, and this sort of gain was common among all students.
In addition to earning better marks, students developed strong techniques and strategies they could employ for the rest of their learning careers. This is where the true value of tutoring exists. Tutoring equips students with valuable life skills they can apply to a range of situations in their personal and professional lives. At Tutoring…With A Twist, we firmly believe in teaching life skills alongside the curriculum, and it works to great effect!
