Until we hear what the school's plans are, everything feels so up in the air. I feel lost.

I would just like my child to get down to work on their own. How am I supposed to know how to homeschool?

This can be one-on-one tutoring or group tutoring. A concept from the grade and subject that they are in will be reviewed weekly. For example, let’s say that your child is in grade 5 and they are coming for math. Each week a concept from grade 5 math will be taught. What is homework tutoring?

So far, my child has been working from worksheets that came from class. Will the tutor be able to provide questions, etc. for my child to continue to move along?

With school being out now for the term, do you have the BC school curriculum? What about for my nephew that lives in another province and needs help. Do you have the curriculum for all provinces?

How effective is my son’s tutor actually going to be at tutoring math over a computer?! It seems like a hard way to learn a complicated subject.

We have been offering online tutoring, almost exclusively for math, for three years, so we know it works!

From one of our Math & Science online tutors: “Since my students are both doing math-heavy science subjects, I’ve essentially just been tutoring math. I’ve found it to work quite well. I find it functions in a similar way to a classroom scenario, but the student is able to more easily and freely interact with the material since it’s right there in front of them. All explanations can be aided with drawings through our white board function. Students can ask any clarifying questions right there in real time. A session can even be recorded! Overall, it’s at least as good as (if not better than) tutoring in person.”

From another of our Math & English tutors: “When I was temporarily moving provinces, my in-person students that I was working with still wanted to continue tutoring with me. I agreed to this and started tutoring them online. For the technical end of things, we can screen share to work an equation out together. I found my students to be more focused and therefore, the tutoring to be more effective. This also offered families a lot more flexibility in terms of scheduling as they didn’t have to rush kids to yet another place. When I moved back and could have been in-person with these students again, the families and I chose to continue online tutoring!”

How is rapport established over a computer?

In expanding from Nanaimo, British Columbia to the rest of Vancouver Island, our initial meetings with the families are solely conducted online. These meetings are crucial to the Twisted process as they introduce the child to tutoring to begin to establish rapport and trust.

As the facilitator of these meetings, I was resistant to do them online. I was not a believer in an online platform being effective for our company. Then, one day someone asked me how I took my own personal courses. I replied “online”. In that moment, I realized that online was as effective as in-person!

We began immediately transitioning to doing our initial meetings that way. This has allowed us to serve more people across Vancouver Island and even in different provinces! The integrity that I value so much has continued to be the foundation of these meetings and of our tutoring, even with it being online.

How do tutors adapt to the learning styles when they are trapped behind a screen? It seems to automatically force kids into an Audio style.

Accommodating the learning styles is easier than it would appear. Being that online tutoring is still face to face, we can still capture all of the learning styles.

Auditory learners may benefit in more obvious ways, but visual and kinesthetic learners have a lot to gain as well! For our visual learners, the online format allows for infinite use of colours and pictures. This is a bonus for tutor and parents as they don’t have to carry around tons of paper and craft supplies! As well, we can still be creative in drawing out solutions together.

For kinesthetic learners, we can still show examples and students can still get up and use movement. As well, we can assign meaningful ‘homework’ assignments that encourage them to interact with their surroundings a bit (taking measurements, building models, etc.)

How do you begin to assess my child’s need and where he picks up with no access to incomplete or missing assignments?

Can you explain the different types of tutoring?

Are you offering any reduction in fees due to some people not being able to work at this time?

Do you have other parents inquiring about continuing education while the school is shut down? Just wondering if there is a possibility of getting say 10 students together on a daily basis for half a day.

Do you know what the schools mean when they say they are closed indefinitely but are still expecting teachers to attend?
